Carlos Prazeres Debuts in Project Aquarius 46 Years After His Father, Armando, Conducted the OSB at the Candelária Church

oglobo13 September 2026 at 07:45

Carlos Prazeres will make his debut as principal conductor of the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra in Project Aquarius next Saturday, the 19th, at Praça Mauá, in the Port Zone of Rio de Janeiro. The event marks his first performance leading the OSB in a public concert and as the person responsible for the initiative, which for more than five decades has united classical and popular music in free performances.

Carlos's connection with Project Aquarius is old and familial. His father, conductor Armando Prazeres (1934-1999), was involved in the creation of the project in 1972, alongside one of the founders, Isaac Karabtchevsky. In 1980, Armando conducted the OSB performing Handel's "The Messiah" at the Candelária Church, within Aquarius — 44 years before his son's debut.

Carlos Prazeres was born in 1974 and had a direct connection with Karabtchevsky, who was his conducting professor in Italy. This familial and educational connection reinforces the importance of the moment for the history of Brazilian classical music and for the trajectory of the orchestra itself.

Project Aquarius was created in 1972 and became a landmark in the Brazilian musical scene by promoting the integration between classical and popular music in free shows, consolidating itself over more than five decades as a cultural reference in Rio de Janeiro.

Why this matters

This article is relevant for Rio readers and lovers of classical and popular music in Brazil, as it marks the return of a family tradition leading the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra and offers a free opportunity to attend a significant cultural presentation in the Port Zone of Rio, connecting generations of conductors in a cultural project consolidated for over 50 years.
