DECO Proteste conducts a weekly analysis of the price of the Essential Food Products basket, comprising 63 products. In the week of September 2 to 9, 2026, the food basket costs €255.26, representing an increase of €0.53 cents compared to the previous week. Since the beginning of the year, the basket price has increased by €13.43, corresponding to a rise of 5.55 percent.
The product with the biggest increase last week was mackerel, which recorded a rise of €1.03, representing a 23 percent increase. Regarding increases since the beginning of 2026, Carolina rice was the product whose price increased the most, rising by €0.41, equivalent to a 30 percent increase.
The article states that Russia's invasion of Ukraine pressured the agri-food sector, as that country is the origin of a large proportion of cereals consumed in the European Union and Portugal. This factor worsened an already difficult situation due to the consequences of the pandemic and drought, resulting in limitations on the supply of raw materials and increased production costs, namely fertilisers and energy.
DECO's list of the essential goods basket includes 63 products distributed across several categories, namely meat, fish, frozen goods, fruit and vegetables, dairy products and groceries, covering products such as pork loin, cod, chicken, rice, olive oil, among others.
