The first matchday of the Champions League league phase had its matchday XI revealed. This XI does not include Diogo Costa, goalkeeper for FC Porto, who was left out of the selection. Likewise, no player from Sporting CP earned a place in this XI of outstanding performances. Similarly, no player from FC Porto was chosen to be part of this team. The absence of players from the two main Portuguese clubs thus marks the first edition of the new Champions format.
