Nepal estimated a cost of 4.78 billion dollars for the reconstruction of the affected areas. The value includes the rehabilitation of destroyed infrastructures, housing and essential services in the devastated regions.
The catastrophe was caused by the collapse of a glacier, which caused a large wave of water and mud. The phenomenon, classified as a glacial lake outburst flood, hit several villages in the mountainous zones of the country.
The disaster caused more than 1,400 dead and thousands of missing persons. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, although they are hindered by the difficult accessibility of the affected areas and adverse weather conditions.
Nepalese authorities have already begun appeals to the international community for financial and logistical support. The country faces an enormous humanitarian challenge, with thousands of displaced persons who need immediate assistance in shelter, food and healthcare.
