25 years of September 11: from bomb threat in Porto to Boavista's draw in Liverpool

Maisfutebol11 September 2026 at 19:21

On September 11, 2001, when the world was shocked by the terrorist attacks in the United States, European football did not stop and competitions continued normally. The 25th anniversary of this tragic date is now being commemorated.

Luís Figo, Portuguese international, shone that day while playing for Real Madrid, playing in Rome in a match that maintained the European sporting routine despite the chaos being experienced on the other side of the Atlantic.

Portuguese clubs were also in action in the Champions League. Boavista, a team known for their checkered kit (due to the black and white stripes of their uniform), traveled to Liverpool to face Liverpool at Anfield, achieving a draw that silenced the famous English stadium.

The Juventus delegation, who were opponents of FC Porto in the Champions League, were involved in a tense moment when the hotel they were staying in was evacuated due to a bomb threat. The threat would prove false, but created additional alarm on a day already marked by terror.
