Euro falls to the 1.15 dollar level after US inflation data release

Jornal Económico11 September 2026 at 18:45

The euro fell on Friday, September 11, to the 1.15 dollar level, after the release of inflation data in the United States. At 18:00 (Lisbon time), the single currency was trading at 1.1599 dollars, down from 1.1619 dollars on Thursday. The European Central Bank set the euro's reference exchange rate at 1.1592 dollars. The European currency also fell against the pound and the yen.

The US Consumer Price Index registered a year-on-year change of 3.4% in August, the same value as July, keeping the inflation rate unchanged. Excluding food and energy, core prices increased 2.4% in August, slightly below July's 2.5%, representing the third consecutive decline. Energy prices rose 16.3% compared to the previous year, against 14.3% in July, while food prices increased 2.7%, three tenths less than the previous month.

On a monthly basis, inflation accelerated 0.4% in August, after increasing only 0.1% in July. Monthly core inflation rose 0.3%, after growing 0.2% in the previous month.

Inflation in the US thus remains above the 2% target of the American Federal Reserve, in a context where the European Central Bank has again raised interest rates to control prices in the euro area.
