Leaders of European banking, including Ana Botin from Santander and Nicolas Namias from BPCE, which holds Novo Banco, made a joint appeal to European officials to simplify banking regulation. In total, eleven leaders of European banks subscribed to this demand.
The bankers specifically ask that higher capital requirements not be imposed on European banks. The argument is that higher capital requirements could limit the banks' capacity to provide financing.
The purpose of the appeal is to allow European banking to finance Europe at the necessary speed, particularly in the areas of productivity, technology and economic growth.
This position arises in the context of ongoing discussions about banking regulation at the European level, with sector leaders defending that regulatory simplification is essential to boost the European economy.
