"My life is surrounded by September 11": 25 years after participating in rescue operations, this Portuguese descendant cannot forget that fateful day

CNN Portugal11 September 2026 at 11:13

Twenty-five years after the September 11 attacks, the memories of that day continue to weigh deeply on those who lived through it. CNN Portugal's correspondents in the United States met a Portuguese descendant firefighter who participated in the first search and rescue operations after the attacks.

The firefighter acknowledges that September 11 marked his entire life, stating that his life is surrounded by that day. The experience of having participated in the rescue operations was particularly harsh, not only because of the intensity of the work carried out, but also because of the personal price he paid.

During the rescue operations, the firefighter survived, but lost friends and colleagues in the line of duty. This loss of companions transformed the experience into a trauma he carries to this day.

Twenty-five years later, as the world marks the anniversary of the attacks, this Portuguese descendant firefighter continues to not forget the fateful day that forever changed his life and that of thousands of others.
