GTA 6: Rockstar explains why it avoids relying too heavily on real-world events

Rockstar Games, the British studio behind the Grand Theft Auto franchise, explained why it avoids relying too heavily on real-world events for the upcoming GTA 6. The company acknowledged that the game's extended development period forced the team to carefully select references drawn directly from real events.

Although GTA was conceived in a British studio, much of the franchise's narrative style was built through biting satire of American society, including its excesses, television, advertising, politics, and in recent years, the internet and social media.

GTA 6 will maintain this tendency when released for PS5 and Xbox Series. The game will continue to satirize American culture and society, following the franchise's traditional approach, but with greater care in selecting references to real-world events—something that the long development period allowed the studio to reflect on more thoroughly.
