Russia warned Lithuania that if it deploys nuclear weapons on its territory, the country will become a target of Russian Strategic Forces. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made this statement on Friday when commenting on the Baltic nation's willingness to remove from its Constitution the prohibition on the emplacement of these weapons.
Peskov told Russian public television that if nuclear weapons aimed at Russia appear on Lithuanian territory, correspondingly the country's territory will be in the sights of Russian nuclear weapons. The Kremlin spokesman reiterated Russia's position of considering any threat to its national security.
Lithuania, which is a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), expressed willingness to amend its Constitution and remove the prohibition on the deployment of nuclear weapons on its territory. This measure is part of a broader tension between Russia and Western alliance member countries.
