The Russian Government warned on Friday that Lithuania could become a target of Russian Strategic Forces if it deploys nuclear weapons on its territory. The spokesperson for the Russian presidency, Dmitry Peskov, stated in remarks to Russian public television that if nuclear weapons pointed at Russia appear in Lithuania, the country will automatically come under the sights of Russian nuclear weapons.
Peskov considered this decision to be something foreseeable and that it represents an escalation in tensions. The spokesperson explained that if Lithuania deploys nuclear weapons on its territory, these will inevitably be pointed eastward, meaning against Russia, and not against the West.
On Thursday, the speaker of the Lithuanian Parliament, Juozas Olekas, stated that the body plans to soon pass a constitutional amendment to remove the ban on the deployment of weapons of mass destruction on Lithuanian territory. Olekas argued that the article of the Constitution that will be amended no longer reflects current geopolitical realities.
According to the LRT.lt portal, the planned legislative schedules will likely require extending the autumn session period until January 13, 2027, to pass this constitutional amendment.
