Mercadona's egg supplier will invest 200 million to eliminate cages from all its farms in four years

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General11 September 2026 at 09:14

Grupo Huevos Guillén, Mercadona's egg supplier, will invest 200 million euros over the next four years to completely eliminate cages from its supply chain. This investment is part of its strategic plan to transform its farms and adopt cage-free production systems.

Of the total investment, 116 million euros will be allocated progressively between 2026 and 2027. The remaining 84 million euros will be divided equally over the following two fiscal years, allowing for a gradual transition to the new production systems.

With this expansion plan, the group expects to expand its global production capacity to reach a flock of 10 million hens by 2030. This figure represents significant growth compared to its current capacity.

This measure is part of a growing trend in the sector toward more sustainable and animal welfare-friendly practices, responding to both consumer demands and the food sector's environmental commitments.
