The Portuguese Social Security has a new mechanism for protecting the contributory career and support for citizens who are not in work. This new regime emerges as a solution for those who wish to maintain or guarantee social protection even outside the formal labor market.
The optional regime of Social Security covers workers and citizens who do not have mandatory coverage in the system. In this way, people who do not contribute mandatorily can voluntarily join this social protection mechanism.
The new mechanism allows for protection in various life situations, including old age, disability, death, illness, and parenthood. Thus, the citizens covered can guarantee rights even during periods when they are not active in the labor market.
