Copper price could almost double by 2035: digitalization and energy transition pressure demand

SAPO Notícias11 September 2026 at 08:06

The global demand for metals such as copper, nickel, and aluminum is expected to increase significantly by 2035, driven by electrification, renewable energies, electric vehicles, and the expansion of data centers. Credit insurer Coface anticipates that copper prices may almost double in the period up to 2035, reflecting this growing demand.

Digital transformation and the energy transition are the main factors pressuring metal demand. The expansion of technological and energy infrastructures requires large quantities of these materials, creating unprecedented demand.

Coface anticipates structural deficits of copper, nickel, and aluminum in the coming years. This situation is expected to exert lasting pressure on the prices of these metals, with significant implications for various industries and economies worldwide.

Goods Barometer Indicates Resilient Trade Growth Despite Challenges

Global goods trade continued to strengthen in mid-2026, despite persistent geopolitical and political uncertainties, according to the World Trade Organization (WTO) Goods Trade Barometer. The report indicates that sectors such as manufacturing and agriculture show positive signs of recovery, driven by growing demand in emerging markets. Although tensions between major powers and divisions in trade agreements have created a challenging environment, technological advances and logistics improvements have allowed supply chains to adapt quickly. Analysts attribute this resilience to investment in infrastructure and digitalization adopted by companies to circumvent protectionist policies, although they warn that political and economic uncertainties may still influence the future trajectory of trade.

The markets don't save the good student from Fitch. See this week's "Weekly"

This week's "Semanário" from Jornal Económico analyses a week rich in economic and political developments, from Portugal's rating upgrade by Fitch to A+ to the ECB's interest rate hike of 25 basis points, including the AfD's historic victory in Germany, the Portuguese government's 800 million fiscal measures to block a motion of censure, and the implementation of the new electronic border system in Portugal. The week was also marked by geopolitical tension in the Middle East, which drove oil prices above 100 dollars and worsened Portuguese debt yields, demonstrating that, despite Portugal being considered a "good student" by Fitch, the markets don't forgive when it comes to financing.
