The European Commission has committed to strengthening and extending cohesion policies and Posei aid for the primary sector in the 2028-2034 Multiannual Financial Framework, as part of a new community strategy for the Outermost Regions (ORs). This decision aims to guarantee continued support for the European territories furthest from the continent.
The central government reported that the Canary Islands and the other nine territories classified as ORs will be able to maintain their role as managing authorities for the specific funds allocated to these regions. This means these territories will continue to have autonomy in administering the European resources assigned to them.
Furthermore, the outermost regions will be able to maintain a direct and coordinated relationship with Brussels, without intermediaries. The objective is to prevent the centralization of European funds, ensuring that OR territories actively participate in their management and distribution.
The Canary Islands, in particular, are expected to assume a geo-strategic role for the European Union, taking advantage of their privileged geographic position in the Atlantic. This strategy reinforces the importance of these regions for European interests in the international context.
