The Asian giant Shein fails on the Stock Exchange due to its environmental impact

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General11 September 2026 at 07:42

The fast fashion industry, characterized by the constant cycle of buying and discarding clothes, represents one of the greatest environmental threats on the planet. The textile sector consumes enormous amounts of water, with up to 3,000 liters needed to manufacture a simple pair of jeans, according to the Polytechnic University of Madrid. Additionally, it is a major generator of microplastics and CO2 emissions.

The Chinese company Shein is pointed out as the world champion of fast fashion, being the target of criticism from various sectors. The criticisms are not limited only to environmental impacts, but also cover issues related to human rights and labor conditions.

The company faces opposition and questioning from multiple fronts due to its mass production and low-cost practices, which raise concerns about working conditions in its supply chains and respect for workers' rights.

Goods Barometer Indicates Resilient Trade Growth Despite Challenges

Global goods trade continued to strengthen in mid-2026, despite persistent geopolitical and political uncertainties, according to the World Trade Organization (WTO) Goods Trade Barometer. The report indicates that sectors such as manufacturing and agriculture show positive signs of recovery, driven by growing demand in emerging markets. Although tensions between major powers and divisions in trade agreements have created a challenging environment, technological advances and logistics improvements have allowed supply chains to adapt quickly. Analysts attribute this resilience to investment in infrastructure and digitalization adopted by companies to circumvent protectionist policies, although they warn that political and economic uncertainties may still influence the future trajectory of trade.

The markets don't save the good student from Fitch. See this week's "Weekly"

This week's "Semanário" from Jornal Económico analyses a week rich in economic and political developments, from Portugal's rating upgrade by Fitch to A+ to the ECB's interest rate hike of 25 basis points, including the AfD's historic victory in Germany, the Portuguese government's 800 million fiscal measures to block a motion of censure, and the implementation of the new electronic border system in Portugal. The week was also marked by geopolitical tension in the Middle East, which drove oil prices above 100 dollars and worsened Portuguese debt yields, demonstrating that, despite Portugal being considered a "good student" by Fitch, the markets don't forgive when it comes to financing.

A 720 thousand euro contract will allow the installation of seven new PRVs and the renovation of eight others, while another 300 thousand euro intervention has already created eight new MCZ. These measures are part of the strategy to reduce non-revenue water, which represented approximately 18% at the end of 2025, in a municipality with almost 1,900 kilometres of pipelines.
