The Supreme Court (STF) is experiencing an unprecedented crisis less than 30 days before the first round of the elections. Minister André Mendonça lifted the secrecy on the Federal Police report that revealed messages between his colleague Alexandre de Moraes and banker Daniel Vorcaro, owner of Master bank. In response, Moraes requested investigations against Mendonça for alleged indications of crimes of responsibility, abuse of power, and administrative impropriety.
The open confrontation also included the removal, by Mendonça, of the Federal Police director-general, Andrei Rodrigues, which was reviewed the following day by Minister Flávio Dino. The president of the STF, Edson Fachin, ended up annulling the decisions of both Mendonça and Dino, requested explanations from those involved, removed Moraes from the rapporteurship of the fake news inquiry, and called an extraordinary plenary session for next Tuesday.
The crisis is occurring during the electoral period and puts into question the credibility of the country's highest court. The question that remains is which candidate benefits most from this internal war: former president Lula, Senator Bolsonaro's son, or a possible candidate from outside the political establishment.
