Anthropic blocks use of AI models that could help create biological weapons

Jornal de Negócios11 September 2026 at 07:29

The company Anthropic identified at least five projects where their artificial intelligence models were used in research that could support the development of biological weapons. This discovery led the company to block the use of their models in these circumstances.

Some of these projects had high pandemic potential, meaning that the research in question could eventually facilitate the creation of biological agents capable of causing large-scale pandemics.

Anthropic decided to implement restrictions to prevent their AI models from being used in research of this nature, thereby reinforcing the existing security controls at the company.

This situation arises in a context of growing concern about the misuse of artificial intelligence technologies in the development of weapons of mass destruction and other malicious purposes.

AI can help us talk to animals, but there's a problem: privacy

Researchers warn that, although artificial intelligence may one day enable the translation of animal communication, this technology raises serious ethical and privacy issues. The ability to understand and interpret animal communications could benefit science and species conservation, but it could also violate the intrinsic privacy of animals and raise dilemmas about how to use that information without exploiting or harming species.
