What is West Nile virus, which caused 41 deaths in Italy and has already arrived in Brazil

Italy recorded 41 deaths and 594 confirmed cases of West Nile virus this year, according to a bulletin from the Superior Health Institute (ISS) with data as of September 8. In Brazil, four cases were confirmed in 2026, with one death, in the states of São Paulo and Santa Catarina.

West Nile virus belongs to the Flaviviridae family, the same as dengue, Zika, chikungunya and yellow fever. It was first identified in 1937 in Uganda, from which its name derives, and today circulates in several regions of virtually all continents.

The infection is transmitted mainly through the bite of Culex mosquitoes, the common house mosquito.
