A dark stain took over a stretch of the sands of Copacabana Beach, in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro, this Thursday, after rain hit the city. The dirty sand could be seen at the height of post 5, and it is still not known what would have caused the problem. Technicians from the State Environmental Institute inspected the site to try to discover the cause of the pollution.
It is not the first time the same stretch of Copacabana Beach has presented problems. In early December 2024, dark water took over the sand between posts 4 and 5. At the time, the concessionaire Águas do Rio stated that it was runoff from rainwater with the presence of diluted effluents, rubber residue, asphalt, and dirt from public roads, and that this type of occurrence was expected.
