The Regulatory Entity for Social Communication (ERC) concluded that TVI deviated from the social responsibility required of a television broadcaster by airing comments that downplayed the gravity of an alleged rape and called into question the victim's lack of consent. The decision comes following a complaint filed after an interview conducted by Cristina Ferreira.
The regulator considered that the interview violated fundamental ethical principles in the coverage of sexual violence cases, by airing comments that minimized the seriousness of the alleged crime. The ERC believes that the way the situation was handled may have contributed to the normalization of abusive behaviors.
As a corrective measure, TVI will now have to broadcast the regulator's decision on air, thus making public the censorship of the way the program handled the topic. This disclosure aims to ensure transparency with the public about the conclusions reached by the regulator.
The case once again highlights the discussion about the ethical limits of the media in approaching sensitive topics, particularly when sexual crimes and the protection of victims are at stake.
