Rangel criticizes measures with 'pull effect' for migrants

RTP Notícias10 September 2026 at 20:10

The Portuguese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Augusto Santos Silva, today criticized in parliament measures that may have a "pull effect" on migrants. The statement comes in the context of the migratory crisis that affected Ceuta in July, when thousands of people attempted to enter the Spanish enclave.

Santos Silva stressed that the massive entry of migrants into Ceuta did not represent a threat to the Schengen area, contradicting concerns that had been raised by other European countries. The minister defended that the situation was adequately managed by the Spanish authorities.

The reference to a "pull effect" indicates the concern that certain policies or measures may encourage more people to attempt the crossing, worsening situations of migratory pressure at European borders. This position of Portugal aligns with the approach of other European Union countries that intend to avoid policies that may attract additional migratory flows.

Bolsonaro allies distance themselves from Frias and admit isolating him to contain campaign damage

Allies of Senator Flavio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) are distancing themselves from Deputy Mario Frias (PL-SP), target of a Federal Police operation on Thursday, and are considering isolating him to contain electoral damage less than 30 days from the first round. The PF points to Frias as part of the "political core" of an organization under investigation for suspected misappropriation of public funds, including parliamentary amendments for projects related to the film "Dark Horse," about the life of former President Jair Bolsonaro. The strategy of individualizing the problem is not new and had already been adopted in other crises, such as the "rachadinha" suspicions in Frias's office in the Chamber.
