26.5 million investment announcement for Lisbon fails to convince socialist council members at CML

Olhares de Lisboa10 September 2026 at 19:59

The Lisbon City Council approved on September 9 a set of investments totaling 26.5 million euros. This amount includes 6.5 million euros for pedestrian pavement and urban furniture conservation, 15 million for the city's digital renewal, and approximately 5 million transferred for urban hygiene in the capital's parishes.

The investments were announced by the municipal executive led by Carlos Moedas, current president of the CML. The council meeting allowed the formal approval of these funds, which represent a significant part of the municipal budget for interventions in the city.

However, the Socialist Party councilors contested most of these measures. The PS issued a statement questioning the executive's priorities and expressing dissatisfaction with the approved decisions, demonstrating a critical position regarding the actions of the PSD/CDS-PP majority in the council.

Beyond contesting the approved funds, the Socialist councilors also recalled that Carlos Moedas has not yet presented the conclusions of the inquiry into the Elevador da Glória accident. This demand for "accountability" by the PS emerges as another point of discord between the opposition and the municipal executive.

Bolsonaro allies distance themselves from Frias and admit isolating him to contain campaign damage

Allies of Senator Flavio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) are distancing themselves from Deputy Mario Frias (PL-SP), target of a Federal Police operation on Thursday, and are considering isolating him to contain electoral damage less than 30 days from the first round. The PF points to Frias as part of the "political core" of an organization under investigation for suspected misappropriation of public funds, including parliamentary amendments for projects related to the film "Dark Horse," about the life of former President Jair Bolsonaro. The strategy of individualizing the problem is not new and had already been adopted in other crises, such as the "rachadinha" suspicions in Frias's office in the Chamber.
