Spain approves naturalization of thousands of citizens from Western Sahara occupied by Morocco

The Spanish Parliament approved a bill that allows the naturalization of thousands of citizens from Western Sahara, a territory currently occupied by Morocco and which was the last Spanish colony.

The proposal establishes as the main requirement to access the naturalization process being born before September 29, 1977 in the territory of Western Sahara, or being a direct descendant of those people.

The text was approved with the favorable votes of the majority, but had the abstention of the conservative wing of Congress, formed by the Popular Party, Vox and Junts, who did not want to participate in the vote.

This decision represents a significant gesture on the part of Spain towards the former colony, whose legal status and future remain unresolved in the context of geopolitical tensions in the North Africa region.
