The city of Rio de Janeiro announced a new municipal program called Reviver Cinema, which aims to revitalize movie theaters. The project proposes investments so that viewers have other options beyond the multiple theater screens present in shopping malls, and can operate in city-owned facilities or in partnerships with the private sector.

The first phase of the program incorporates existing venues, such as Cinema Nova Brasília, located in Complexo do Alemão, Cine Santa, in Santa Teresa, and Grupo Estação. Cinema Nova Brasília, inaugurated in 2009, reopens this month as part of this initiative.

In another phase, the package includes street theaters that have been closed for decades, such as Cine Matilde, in Bangu, the former Cine Cachambi, and Cine Vaz Lobo, in the neighborhoods of the same name.

The article also mentions Cinema Iris, which survived all the transformations of downtown Rio, from silent films to the porn era, and now prepares for the new changes brought by the program.
