Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is often misunderstood, as not all children with this diagnosis are restless or completely unable to concentrate. The real challenge lies in being able to direct and regulate attention for tasks that do not spark interest, which can be mistaken for lack of motivation or laziness.
The topic was addressed in an episode of the Top of Mind podcast, hosted by doctor Margarida Santos, who spoke with neuropaediatrician Tiago Proença dos Santos about this neurodevelopmental disorder.
During the episode, Tiago Proença dos Santos explained the signs parents and teachers should watch for to identify ADHD, also warning about the influence that screen time can have on children's development and behaviour.
The neuropaediatrician also addressed the role of medication in treating the disorder, contributing to a more informed discussion about a condition that affects many children and continues to be misunderstood by society.
