Isao Harimoto, Japanese baseball legend who survived the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, died at 86. Born in Japan, son of Korean parents, Harimoto built a 23-season career in professional baseball and accumulated 3,085 hits, a record that remains in the country.
Harimoto was five years old when the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima in August 1945. He survived thanks to his mother, who placed herself in front of him and his sister to protect them from the explosion.
A year earlier, at four years old, Harimoto suffered an accident that caused burns and limited the movements of his right hand. After that, he learned to play baseball with his left hand.
