Portuguese economist Ricardo Reis has allegedly been removed from a selection process for the position of chief economist at the International Monetary Fund. The specialist was considered one of the favorites to hold the position.
The reason cited for the removal is related to criticism that Ricardo Reis allegedly made about the tariffs imposed by the Donald Trump administration. These statements were reportedly poorly received by the United States, which is the largest shareholder of the IMF.
The selection process for the position of chief economist at the Fund is overseen by the institution's board of directors. The position became vacant following the departure of Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas, who left the position earlier this year.
