IMF removed Ricardo Reis after criticism of Trump's tariffs

The International Monetary Fund withdrew the nomination of Portuguese economist Ricardo Reis for the position of chief economist of the institution. According to the Financial Times, the IMF abandoned the nomination after learning of previous statements in which Ricardo Reis criticized the trade tariffs imposed by Donald Trump.

Ricardo Reis was seen as the favorite for the position of chief economist of the International Monetary Fund. However, his critical positions regarding the tariff policies of the Trump administration reportedly led the institution to back down.

The Financial Times reported that the IMF decided to remove Ricardo Reis from the race for the position after analyzing his previous statements about the trade tariffs imposed by the former president of the United States.
