The new DGT rule for traffic jams that comes into force on October 1: this is how the emergency lane works

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General10 September 2026 at 06:00

Spain's Directorate General for Traffic (DGT) implemented a new rule that comes into force on October 1, making it mandatory to create an emergency lane on roads when a traffic jam occurs. Until now, this practice was carried out spontaneously by drivers.

When there is a traffic jam on the public road and an emergency vehicle appears, the natural instinct of drivers is to open a central lane to facilitate the passage of priority vehicles. This attitude, which was voluntary, now becomes a legal obligation.

The objective of this measure is to ensure that vehicles such as ambulances, fire trucks, and other emergency vehicles can circulate more quickly and efficiently during traffic jam situations. The DGT considers that this change will contribute to saving lives by reducing emergency response times.

The new regulation establishes clear guidelines on how drivers must proceed to form this emergency lane, transforming a behavior that was previously just a gesture of goodwill from motorists into a mandatory traffic rule.

Discos Pedidos: Chega to propose zero VAT on food basket. Is this when Parliament approves?

Chega will present next week a bill to set VAT to zero on the food basket, one month before the submission of the State Budget proposal for 2027. This is not the first time the party proposes this measure, and it is not alone in defending it, as PS has also already presented similar proposals, although without success. The Government argues that the generalist measure is not the most appropriate to help Portuguese families, since it ends up benefiting more those with higher incomes, as exemplified by the finance minister with the reference to "Cristiano Ronaldo's Wagyu steak". Several parties defend the reduction of VAT on food, but defend different paths, which has prevented an agreement. The price of the food basket continues to rise, having reached 255.26 euros, according to Deco Proteste.

Let's Then Talk Again About Sahra Wagenknecht

The article analyzes Sahra Wagenknecht and the BSW party, arguing that, despite promising to stop the AfD, the party is preparing to abstain and allow the AfD to govern Saxony-Anhalt. The author draws parallels with Danish social democracy, which had its worst result since 1903, and with the English Labour Party, which lost its leader, suggesting that this is a pattern of capitulation that leads to defeat. The article concludes that Wagenknecht was destined for defeat precisely because she was destined for capitulation.
