Heat deaths in Spain have doubled since the year 2000, according to an international report published by the scientific journal The Lancet. The study reveals that heat-related deaths increased on average 95.4% between the late 20th century and the year 2024.
In the specific case of Catalonia, all provincial capitals recorded increases above 100% in the number of deaths attributed to heat. This region is one of the most affected by the phenomenon.
The autonomous communities of the Valencian Community, the Balearic Islands and both Castiles also show similar increases to those in Catalonia, all exceeding the 100% mark.
The report, prepared by international experts, documents this alarming trend of growth in heat deaths in Spain over the past decades.
