The Minister of Justice, Rita Júdice, acknowledged the existence of structural problems in the Portuguese prison system. In public statements, the government official acknowledged that the situation in prisons is not ideal and that measures are needed to correct these deficiencies.
The prison population has increased significantly since March of this year, which increases the pressure on the system. This growth represents an additional challenge for authorities in managing prison facilities.
Rita Júdice reaffirmed that the Lisbon Prison Facility will be closed by 2028, maintaining the commitment previously made. The minister specified that one of the prison's wings should close during the current year.
