Last week, images that went viral on social media recorded illegal African immigrants landing at Playa de San José, in Níjar, in the province of Almería, in Andalusia. The footage shows several men jumping into the blue waters and walking along the beach sand as frightened witnesses observe the scene. A swimmer in shorts appears fleeing the area during the unexpected landing, while others remain seated nearby as if nothing is happening.
The coastline of Níjar has become a hotspot for intense boat activity coming from North Africa. The immigrants depart from various points in Africa after hiring the "taxi" service, which provides illegal transport to Spanish beaches. Last week, the Spanish Coast Guard rescued nine Algerian men from a boat about 65 kilometers off the coast.
