Minister Flavio Dino of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) reinstated Andrei Rodrigues as chief of the Federal Police, overturning an earlier decision by his fellow court member André Mendonça. The decision was made amid an institutional crisis that hit the Brazilian judiciary.
In addition to overturning Mendonça's decision, Dino issued a severe public reprimand to his court colleague, who had suspended Andrei from the position through an interim measure. Dino's attitude further intensified the pressure on STF President Edson Fachin.
Faced with the escalation of the conflict between the ministers, Fachin chose to postpone the session that was scheduled for that afternoon. The night before, the Attorney General's Office (AGU) had filed an appeal seeking suspension of Mendonça's injunction.
Fachin granted a 72-hour deadline for Mendonça to respond to the AGU's appeal, following his strategy of buying time to build and make decisions, aligning the deadlines with other requests for explanations made the previous week, which had a five-business-day deadline.
