The Government authorized the declassification of a parcel of communal land in Salto for the construction of an Official Companion Animal Shelter Center. The decision was published on Monday in the Official Gazette, through Decree No. 18/2026, signed by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro.
The parcel in question has 20,337 square meters and belongs to the Local Community of Communal Land Holders of Salto. It is integrated within the Barroso forestry perimeter, having been subject to the partial forestry regime since 1944. The Montalegre City Council requested the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forestry (ICNF) to exclude this area from that regime in order to proceed with the municipal facility.
In exchange for the area removed from the forestry regime, the communal land holders of Salto decided, unanimously, to submit another parcel of communal land, with 23,539 square meters, also located in the parish of Salto, to the same forestry regime.
