The Spanish Government approved in mid-August the extension of the operating license for the Almaraz nuclear power plant, located in the province of Cáceres. The Ministry for the Ecological Transition, led by Vice President Sara Aagesen, authorized the postponement of the facility's closure until June 2030, changing the previously planned dates of 2027 and 2028 for the two reactors at the plant.
This decision comes in a context of tension between the Executive and the major electricity companies, namely Iberdrola and Endesa, which intended to obtain similar extensions in the future for the rest of Spain's nuclear plants.
However, the Government made it known that it categorically rejects this possibility, making it clear that the Almaraz extension will not serve as a precedent for other nuclear installations in the country. Aagesen directly communicated this position to the energy sector companies.
