A section of the historic wall of Castelo Branco collapsed in the early morning of January 21, 2025, at the corner of Rua Vaz Preto with Rua Mouzinho Magro. The collapse was caused by intense rain and bad weather, causing material damage to a vehicle and causing stones to fall into a courtyard, but with no victims. The City Council announced at the time the cleaning of the rubble and the recovery of the original stones.
More than twenty months have passed since that incident. On September 9, 2026, Leopoldo Rodrigues announced to the local media the advancement of reconstruction, after completing the necessary procedures and obtaining authorization from Cultural Heritage. The newspaper O REGIÕES questions however why it took so long for the reconstruction to reach this announcement stage.
The editorial, signed by Fernando Jesus Pires, director of the independent newspaper O REGIÕES, criticizes the so-called "policy of announcements" at the expense of the "policy of realization." The newspaper raises questions about the procedures carried out during this period, the studies and opinions requested, the cost of the intervention, the execution deadline and when the wall will be effectively reconstructed. The newspaper states it is not opposition to the City Council, but assumes the responsibility to question, inform and scrutinize.
The editorial argues that the historic wall is not political property of a mandate, but heritage of the city that belongs to history and must be treated with respect. The newspaper calls for the work to be executed with rigor, transparency and within the deadline, emphasizing that a local newspaper has the duty to follow the process until completion and to not allow political communication to override the reality of execution.
