EU considers local accommodation a problem in Lisbon

Observador9 September 2026 at 14:03

The European Housing Commissioner will propose a new law aimed at greater regulation of local accommodation. This proposal comes following growing concerns about the impact of this type of accommodation in European cities.

According to the information provided, the European Commissioner considered that accommodation for short-term rental is part of the problem in many cities. This statement indicates that short-term rental platforms, such as Airbnb, are being identified as a factor contributing to the housing crisis.

Lisbon is one of the cities mentioned as an example of this problem, where the growth of local accommodation has been particularly significant. The city has been facing difficulties in terms of access to housing, with many residents facing high rental prices.

The European legislative proposal therefore aims to establish new rules that allow municipalities to have more control over the licensing and monitoring of local accommodation, in an attempt to balance tourism with the housing needs of citizens.
