Europe needs 24.7 billion to adapt charging networks to the growth of electric cars

A study by Siemens, commissioned by EIT Urban Mobility, ChargeUp Europe and ACEA, reveals that Europe needs 24.7 billion euros of investment in electricity distribution networks by 2030 to keep up with the growth of electric vehicles, a figure that could drop to 14.1 billion with the adoption of intelligent charge management systems. The analysis, which assessed 64 urban centers in the EU and European Economic Area, predicts that the number of electric vehicles in these cities will multiply by 3.8 by 2030, with 77.7% of the necessary physical investment concentrated in low-voltage networks, mainly due to residential charging. Lisbon appears among the European cities with the greatest need for investment, with an estimate of around 500 million euros, while Barcelona would need 200 million and Madrid, Seville, Valencia and Zaragoza around 100 million each. The authors emphasize that intelligent load management and physical network reinforcement are complementary measures, and that the expansion of charging infrastructure must be coordinated with electricity network planning.
