Minister Maria da Graça Carvalho stated that the State's purchase of REN was the news she most enjoyed giving to the Portuguese. This position comes in the context of the acquisition of a 13.7% state stake in REN.
According to the minister, this stake allows the State to have additional intervention in a company responsible for electricity transmission and for gas transmission and storage. The State thus reinforces its presence in a sector considered strategic.
Maria da Graça Carvalho explained that the decision is related to reasons of sovereignty, public interest, and national security. The government justifies the operation as fundamental to guarantee greater control over essential energy infrastructures.
