Minister says that "fuel taxation is very important" to fund NHS and Education

SAPO Notícias9 September 2026 at 12:55

Minister Maria da Graça Carvalho stated that fuel taxation is "very important" to fund the National Health Service and Education in Portugal. These statements come in the context of a comparison between the fiscal choices of Portugal and Spain regarding fuels.

The official justified the option taken by the Portuguese Government, which followed a different path from that adopted by the Spanish executive. The minister emphasized the importance of revenues from fuel taxation as a source of funding for essential areas of the State.

Maria da Graça Carvalho highlighted that the Portuguese decision to maintain fuel taxation is due to the need to ensure resources for fundamental public services. This position contrasts with the approach followed by Spain during the same period.
