President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva carries out government and campaign agendas in Piauí, a visit that serves as the first test for the non-aggression agreement signed with Senator Ciro Nogueira (PP-PI). Ciro was the head of the Civil House during Jair Bolsonaro's government and is currently seeking to renew his Senate seat through the party he chairs.
Ciro's party adopted neutrality in the presidential race, which frustrated the expectations of Flavio Bolsonaro (PL), who was seeking support from the party's federation alongside União Brasil. In exchange for the neutral support, PT leaders advocate that Lula should not make speeches against Ciro Nogueira in Piauí, the state where the president won with 76% of valid votes in 2022.
Formally, the PT denies the existence of the agreement. The party has a strong presence in the state and is trying to reelect Rafael Fonteles as head of the local executive. In addition to Fonteles, Lula participated in a political event in Teresina with Senate candidates Marcelo Castro (MDB) and Júlio César (PSD), both direct competitors of Ciro Nogueira in the Senate race.
