The Environment minister, Maria da Graça Carvalho, stated that fuel taxation is "very important" to finance the National Health Service (SNS) and Education. These statements were made during a visit to a waste recovery unit in Setúbal.
The minister associated the importance of fuel taxation with the priorities defined by the Portuguese executive, which include reducing direct taxes, pensions, and maintaining the balance of public accounts.
Maria da Graça Carvalho did not specify concrete measures, but made it clear that taxes on fuels play a fundamental role in public finances and in financing essential areas such as health and education.
