Brussels proposes common rules to limit local accommodation in the European Union

Público9 September 2026 at 11:49

The European Commission has put forward a regulation proposal to establish common rules across the European Union aimed at limiting local accommodation platforms like Airbnb. This initiative aims to combat the lack of affordable housing in European urban centers.

The proposal also includes limitations on the use of land that has building capacity, seeking to discourage the conversion of residential spaces for tourist or temporary accommodation purposes.

Municipalities that have already approved their own measures to restrict local accommodation will not be affected by this new European regulation, ensuring that local initiatives already implemented remain in force.

The measure comes in a context of growing concern about access to housing in various European cities, where the proliferation of temporary accommodation platforms has contributed to the increase in rental prices and the reduction of housing supply for permanent residents.

The commentator highlights what he considers to be selective hypocrisy of these artists in their condemnation of certain figures while participating in an event associated with Stalinist regimes responsible for millions of deaths.
