Changes in metabolism caused by sweeteners can be transmitted to future generations, study says

A study published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition, conducted by researchers from the University of Chile, revealed that the sweeteners sucralose and stevia cause metabolic alterations that can be transmitted to future generations. In the research, 47 mice were divided into three groups: one received pure water, another water with sucralose and the third water with stevia. Both groups exposed to sweeteners presented fecal microbiomes more diverse than normal. The researchers found that only male offspring of rats that consumed sucralose showed signs of glucose intolerance, but in the second generation, elevated fasting blood sugar levels were detected in both male offspring from the sucralose group and female offspring from the stevia group, evidencing transgenerational effects.
