EU Court Rejects Hungary's Action Against Ukraine Aid Using Russian Assets

Euronews Portugal9 September 2026 at 12:24

The European Union General Court rejected an action filed by Hungary against aid to Ukraine funded by the interest from frozen Russian assets. The court considered that it had no competence to analyze decisions related to the EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy.

The decision comes in a context of tension between Hungary and European institutions. Budapest decided to expel ten Russian diplomats, which is believed to have contributed to the worsening of relations between the Hungarian government and the EU.

The court based its decision on the separation of powers within the European legal structure, indicating that matters related to common foreign and security policy fall under the exclusive competence of member states and not of European courts.

This ruling represents a judicial defeat for Hungary, which was trying to stop the support mechanism for Ukraine that uses the returns from frozen Russian assets to finance the country's reconstruction and assistance.

The commentator highlights what he considers to be selective hypocrisy of these artists in their condemnation of certain figures while participating in an event associated with Stalinist regimes responsible for millions of deaths.
