OpenAI announced having solved in just 88 hours a mathematical problem with about 90 years, related to the Navier-Stokes equations, one of the seven Millennium Prize Problems identified by the Clay Mathematics Institute.
The problem in question concerns the existence and smoothness of the Navier-Stokes equations, which describe the movement of fluids and have applications in areas such as physics and engineering. Its resolution is associated with a one-million-dollar prize offered by the Clay Mathematics Institute.
However, OpenAI's announcement has already generated controversy. The mathematical community continues to debate the validity and implications of this claimed solution.
