The National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) approved the registrations of two generic medications based on liraglutide. The substance is used in injectable pens for the treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes. Both approved generic medications have a concentration of 6 mg/mL.
The authorizations were granted to the Brazilian pharmaceutical company EMS and published on Tuesday (8) in the Official Gazette of the Union. The company already commercializes two products with this substance: Olire, focused on weight control in adults and adolescents, and Lirux, focused on blood glucose management.
Medications based on liraglutide help reduce appetite and balance blood sugar levels. Both are commercialized in injectable pen format.
The main change with the approval of generics is that these products may be sold under the name of the active ingredient, without the requirement to be linked to a specific commercial brand, which may expand patients' access to these treatments.
