Carlos Alcaraz was eliminated from the US Open by American Ben Shelton in five sets, in a surprising result for the tournament. The match went until 3:30 AM, setting a new record as the latest finishing match in the tournament's history. Shelton thus advanced to the next round of the American Grand Slam.
The young American will now face compatriot Frances Tiafoe, who also secured his place in the quarter-finals. Tiafoe managed to come back from behind in his match against Michelsen, advancing through the tournament.
With this elimination of Alcaraz, the US Open will necessarily have a new champion, as the Spaniard was one of the main favorites for the title. The tournament thus loses one of its leading candidates for the trophy.
