"Make Germany Great Again". Trump welcomes the victory of the German far-right in Saxony-Anhalt

Donald Trump on Tuesday welcomed the victory of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) in the regional elections in Saxony-Anhalt, describing it as a "very good night" for the "Populist Party." On his social network Truth Social, Trump wrote that Germans "are finally tired of the absolutely horrible rules and regulations on immigration," and ended the message with the acronym "MGGA," an adaptation of his famous slogan "Make Germany Great Again."

The AfD, an anti-immigration and pro-Russia party, won around 44% of the votes in Saxony-Anhalt, a deprived region of the former GDR, inflicting a crushing defeat on Chancellor Friedrich Merz's CDU conservatives, who obtained only 17%. This result represents a political earthquake in Germany, as it puts the far-right in a favorable position to govern a region for the first time since 1945.

The AfD's electoral triumph was also hailed by figures close to Trump, including former US Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell and billionaire Elon Musk, who reacted with a resounding "Well done!" to the post by Alice Weidel, co-leader of the far-right party. Musk is a long-time supporter of the AfD.
